A Relaxing Time - and
Opportunties for Great Birding!

Taking a Stroll Around the Lake

Join Audubon members, birders, friends, and families at this annual relaxing and memorable weekend retreat. Just over an hour north of Madison, Camp Lake Lucerne provides comfortable group cabins with several bedrooms, large indoor common rooms with fireplaces, a rec hall with a library and games, large outdoor play areas, and campfire pits. Enjoy being served hot cooked meals in the modern dining hall while looking out at the beautiful spring-fed lake. Take one of the easy hiking and biking trails through the acres of woodlands - can you spot the orchids? - past the restored prairie - watch for bluebirds! - and down to the quiet lake and beach to enjoy turtles, herons, hawks, and orioles, take a camp canoe for a paddle, or just kick back and relax.

You may want to bring your own bike, canoe or kayak, snacks, and a good book (sorry, no pets and no alchohol), and don’t forget your binoculars! All activities are voluntary so there is no strict schedule (other than mealtimes) and plenty of opportunities for fun, exercise, and a bit of education! Each day features group bird walks 'out the door' and carpools to nearby wildlife areas where the more expert birders share their tips, scopes and birdcall recognition skills with novices. Enjoy evening campfires with S'moors, and games, a computer projected birding DVD and other activities indoors. Volunteers will lead nature walks to identify trees and find ladyslippers, listen for the evening Whip-Poor-Will and other bird calls, and - if lucky - you might spot the resident Pileated Woodpecker and Red Shouldered Hawk!

We make our own fun! Here are some of the activities folk usually enjoy...

  • Lake Lucerne Bird Walks - to see Hawks, Orioles, Bluebirds, Towhees, Poccoons, Lady Slippers
  • Birding Carpools - to Germania Marsh and other nearby natural areas to see Herons, Black Terns, and many other species
  • Buena Vista Marsh - see prairie and farmland birds, and maybe a Badger or an elusive Prairie Chicken if lucky!
  • Canoing for Turtles - anytime, self-guided, camp canoes and kayaks are available at the beach for morning, daytime, and moonlight paddles
  • Raptor Presentation - some years Chip the camp manager shows his falcon and other raptors
  • Nature Walks for Kids, Plant and Tree Identification (bring field guides if you have em)
  • Evening Space Astronomy (bring a scope if you have one)
  • Learn Mexican Railroad. Mah Jong and other games
  • Evening Bonfires with Smores - bring fixin's and share campfire chats
  • Shared Songs and Stories - for 'kids' of all ages
  • Travel Pictures, Nature DVD's and Evening Movies
  • Introduction to Tai Chi - great meditative exercise in the outdoors
  • Photography/Digiscoping - share the days pix on the digital projector
  • Birding Education - learn birding by sound and how to use eBird for Citizen Science
  • Help With the Total Weekend Bird Count - Everyone can contribute!

"Join us for a bird walk?" - right out the door!
