If April showers bring May flowers, then
April snowstorms must bring ... the Madison Audubon Society
Art Fair at Olbrich Gardens! Taking place on Saturday, May 5, this
30-year old tradition is looked forward to by over a hundred artists
and thousands of fairgoers each year. This fundraiser for Madison Audubon Society is made possible by over 100 volunteers and if
you haven't already
signed up, please consider pitching in.
The change in seasons also brings the outdoor Farmers Market booth
and restoration work at Madison Audubon's Wildlife Sanctuaries. Take a
look below and please consider helping out for a few hours this busy
season.
The
Art Fair Thanks to all who have
signed up to volunteer so far. We have over
half of the shifts filled (more than 50 volunteers!) but are still in
need of help with Artist Set-Up, Artist Assistants, Silent Auction,
Raffle, Food Prep-Kitchen, Food Tent, Kids' Activities, Native Plant
Sale, Parking, and
Evening Clean-Up.
The fair is on Saturday,
May 5, with volunteer opportunities all day from 6am
and 6pm at Olbrich Gardens.
If you are
able to help, please let me know (call 255-2473 or reply by
email). Thanks!
Goose Pond Restoration Work
Invasive species removal work
nights every Monday in June starting at 6:30 p.m. Work will
concentrate on prairie management at Goose Pond. This is a great way
to learn prairie species. Dress in long sleeves, long pants, and
sturdy shoes. Cold refreshments will be served. As always, work night
may be canceled because of rain. Contact Mark or Sue at (608) 635-4160
or goosep@chorus.net if you need more information.
Adopt a blue bird or tree
swallow trail. Volunteers will monitor tree swallow and blue bird
boxes each week at Goose Pond, from mid-April through 1st of July. The
boxes are all placed and just need monitoring.
Prescribed Prairie Burns at
Goose Pond will continue from now until the end of April. Burns are
scheduled according to weather conditions. No prior experience
necessary. If you are interested, please contact Mark Martin at
635-4160 or goosep@chorus.net
Farmers Market Booth
Do you enjoy the Farmers Market? Want to spend time outside on behalf
of Madison Audubon? One Saturday each month during the outdoor
Farmers Market we set up a booth on the square. The next MAS booth is scheduled for
Saturday, April 28, which is a wonderful opportunity
to promote the Art Fair. Can you help out at this early season
Farmers Market or one later in the year? Audubon Education Program
Our education committee meets once a month, with the next meeting on Monday,
April. 23 at 5 p.m. Join us to learn about opportunities,
including coordinating roles
as well as direct work with youth and the general public. Serve in our
Speakers Bureau, as a Bird Education Mentor, or help develop *new*
activities such as family focused and issue based field trips. If you would like to
be involved with our education program please contact Linda Merrill at
608-233-8961 or by email at badgermerrill@yahoo.com

Spring Ecology Symposium
Brewing Biodiversity: The Connections Between Biodiversity and Coffee
Production
Recently the MAS Population and
Habitat committee published a CAWS
article about empowering women in developing countries being key to
stabilizing population growth. At Madison Ecology Club's Spring
Ecology Symposium learn about another environmental issue facing many
developing countries - the effects of coffee plantations. For more

The mission of Madison Audubon Society
is to educate our members and the public about the natural world and
the threats that natural systems are facing, to engage in advocacy to
preserve and protect these systems, and to develop and maintain
sanctuaries to save and restore natural habitat.
